Based at the City Art Centre, the Learning and Access Section provides an educational service for all of the Division's venues, and undertakes outreach work in the community.

Working with people of all ages and abilities, the education and outreach staff organise a wide range of 'hands-on' activities, art and craft workshops, lectures, seminars, drama sessions and study days.

Education materials for school and adult groups are available. The section operates a school loan box service covering such themes as 'Living in Edinburgh in the 1 8th Century', 'The Edwardians', 'The Second World War', 'The 1950s', 'Schools and Schooldays' and 'The Romans'.

We originate exhibitions which tour the U.K., and provide a Travelling Gallery which takes exhibitions of contemporary art to all parts of Scotland.

Is it an early clothes iron, a weapon or a cobbler's tool? If you would like to know more about your antiques, or the contents of your attic, take them along to any of the city museums. Curatorial staff will identify your item, tell you its history, or put you in touch with someone who can. We do not provide valuations.

The Archaeological Service is responsible for preserving and investigating local sites of archaeological interest, monuments and artefacts dating from prehistory to the 20th century. Archaeological research, fieldwork, excavations and surveys continue to add to the understanding of Edinburgh's history. We organise regular programmes of lunchtime lectures, full day seminars, workshops, etc. on the collections and related themes.
